Historiador y crítico literario inglés. Cuando quebró el colegio donde enseñaba en 1876, decidió ganarse la vida como escritor. Publicó varios volúmenes de crítica sobre literatura francesa, además de voluminosos ensayos sobre literatura inglesa. A pesar de que no llegó a formular ninguna teoría original de la crítica, sus obras fueron muy influyentes por su combinación de formalidad académica con una prosa cautivante que encantaba a todo el público lector por igual. Entre sus obras se destaca A History of Criticism and Literary Taste in Europe from the Earliest Texts to the Present Day [Historia de la crítica y el gusto literario en Europa desde los orígenes hasta el momento actual] (1900–04), uno de los primeros recuentos historiográficos de la teoría crítica y la práctica literaria.
